East Point Academy Names Teachers of the Year

West Columbia, SC  The staff and teachers at East Point Academy have worked harder and smarter than ever to continue the school’s legacy of excellence while reacting to the COVID-19 public health crisis. The school has not missed a beat over the last two years. It has opened its doors every school-day providing rigorous academics with a global focus.

The continued excellence seen in classrooms throughout both school campuses this year made it especially difficult to determine the Elementary Campus and Middle Campus Teachers of the Year.  Staff and board members recently gathered to recognize the winners. Head of School, Mark Bounds and Board Chair, Alan Buck made the special announcement. Jodie Collier, a Mathematics and Algebra teacher was named Middle Campus Teacher of the Year. Lu Liu, a Kindergarten Mathematics, Science and Mandarin teacher was named as the Elementary Campus Teacher of the Year. Then the staff cheered as Collier was named the overall East Point Academy Teacher of the Year.

Liu first served as a teaching assistant at East Point Academy in 2015-16.  After returning to China to complete her education, Lui reunited with East Point three years ago.  She has established herself as a dedicated, caring and fun teacher. “She makes such a positive impact on her students,” commented Deputy Head of School, Andrew Hart.

Collier has been at East Point Middle for three years and in that time has left a big impression on all the students that she has come into contact with. She says, “I’ve always felt a calling to become a teacher and share my math knowledge with students.” Collier has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UofSC. Prior to working at East Point Academy she worked as an engineer in the power and telecommunications field. She will go on to represent East Point in the South Carolina Public Charter School District’s District Teacher of the Year competition.

When asked about the Teacher of the Year honorees, Bounds said, “We have so many amazing teachers at East Point Academy, this is always a tough competition.  I am so proud of Ms. Liu and Ms. Collier, they represent the best of the best.”

East Point Academy is currently enrolling for the 2022/2023 school year, but has limited openings.
