Prior to becoming the East Point Academy Head of School, Mark Bounds served as Chief Information Officer of Lexington-Richland District Five and brings eighteen years of successful educational leadership to East Point Academy. Multiple advanced degrees, numerous leadership program certificates, charter district experience, and knowledge from serving on a dozen educational advisory boards allows him to drive East Point Academy’s academic success. His attention to excellence has been recognized through honors such as the Army Legion of Merit Award, South Carolina Education Policy Fellow, District Five’s Superintendent’s Visionary Award, and the Irmo Chamber of Commerce Education Award.
Before a career in education, Bounds served twenty years in the US military. His duty assignments included, Germany, Washington, D.C., Colorado, Georgia and South Carolina and spent considerable time as Basic Training Battalion Commander, training and educating 5,000 young soldiers annually. This experience cemented his desire to become an educator. In 2000, Bounds retired as Ft. Jackson’s Deputy Chief of Staff and shifted his focus towards improving quality of life for children in South Carolina.
He began his education career working to improve low performing school in South Carolina. Then serving as the State Director of Communities in Schools, the nation’s largest nonprofit dropout prevention organization. Later, he served as the Director of the Office of School Leadership providing training and professional development for school leaders across South Carolina before becoming the state’s Deputy Superintendent for Educator Quality and Leadership and the Deputy Superintendent for School Effectiveness. During his tenure as Deputy Superintendent, South Carolina, Bounds was recognized twice as best in the country for improving teacher quality by EdWeek magazine.
