West Columbia, SC– Arts integration is a fundamental piece of the curriculum at East Point Academy. Eighth grader Ava Rodriguez has honed her talent during her time at the school, and has been selected as a Jr. Artist in Artfields for her piece “Sonder.” Housed out of Lake City, SC, ArtFields is a diverse arts competition, exhibiting artwork selected from all over South Carolina.
When asked about the inspiration behind the piece, Ava explained her self-portrait saying “Sonder is the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. The first time I saw this word, my perspective of the world changed. Everyone has grown up with completely different stories and no one’s life is perfect. The only thing I can hope for you after you read this statement is that this word will stick with you as much as it has me.” In addition to being an accomplished artist, Ava is also part of East Point Academy’s strings program, Run Hard, and Beta Club.
Commenting on Ava’s artistic success, Head of School Mark A. Bounds said “Ava is an amazing artist and wonderful young lady. She has studied at East Point since she was in 4K, and I speak for the whole staff when I say it has been a pleasure to watch her artistic talent progress. We are so proud of her.”
