East Point Academy: A Public Charter School
South Carolina’s First Chinese Immersion Elementary School
Partnered with strong support from USC's Confucius Institute

East Point Academy is a public school that is part of the state's public school system but is classified as a charter school because it is allowed to set critical achievement standards at or above existing public schools. East Point Academy is a small learning community. In 2011, we started with approximately 120 students in grades 4 year-old pre-school through Second Grade. We have been constantly growing since our beginning and now have 540 students, from 3 year-old pre-school to Fifth Grade.
Personalized learning through small classes, bilingual language instruction in English and Chinese by certified teachers, civic engagement, cultural and social awareness activities, and parental involvement will give students the personal attention and extra help they need to succeed in the classroom and in society. All students will benefit from a rigorous, innovative, and learner-centered curriculum, including inquiry-based instruction to acquire, organize, and communicate information and to solve problems.

The mission of East Point Academy is to prepare students for academic and personal success through proficiency in English and Mandarin Chinese, math, science and social studies while learning in an atmosphere that promotes cultural sharing and understanding.

*to support academic excellence for all students with meaningful, innovative learning experiences that improve student learning

*to assist South Carolina in reaching academic excellence, as evidenced by ratings on the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee (EOC) School Report Card.

*to assist its students in reaching academic excellence, as indicated through individual growth over time relative to baseline levels

*to empower students to become listeners, speakers, readers, and writers of Chinese who are capable of communicating in the language in socially, culturally, and developmentally appropriate ways.

Students at EPA will be empowered to use higher-level thinking skills to identify, analyze, and solve problems inherent in their lives and the larger community of the world.

EPA will create new professional opportunities for teachers.
